Black History Month: Patricia Bath

, born in 1942 in Harlem, New York, was an ophthalmologist, inventor and humanitarian. She was the first African American female doctor to receive a patent for a medical device and was also the first woman to head a residency program in ophthalmology at UCLA. Dr. Bath’s most notable achievement was the invention of the laserphaco probe, a device that revolutionized the treatment of cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye that can lead to vision loss, and prior to the laserphaco probe, cataract surgery was performed using a surgical blade. Dr. Bath recognized the limitations of this method and believed that a laser device would be more precise and efficient. In 1986, Dr. Bath patented the laserphaco probe, which uses a laser beam to break up and remove the cloudy lens in cataract surgery. The probe has since been used worldwide to treat millions of people with cataracts and has greatly improved the speed and accuracy of the procedure. It has also helped reduce the number of complications and has made cataract surgery safer for patients. Aside from her groundbreaking work as an inventor, Dr. Bath was also a dedicated humanitarian. She founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in 1980 to increase awareness about the importance of eye health and to provide resources for people in need of eye care. She was also committed to promoting diversity and equity in medicine, and was a strong advocate for increasing the representation of minority groups in the field of medicine. In conclusion, Patricia Bath was a trailblazer in the field of medicine and a true inspiration to many. Her invention of the laserphaco probe has improved the lives of countless individuals, and her commitment to promoting eye health and diversity in medicine will continue to inspire future generations.
